Introducing the Minimalist Birthstone Necklace! Handcrafted in Ottawa, this thoughtfully designed necklace uses 14k gold-filled and sterling silver chain and wiring, 3 faceted gemstone beads of your choosing and 2 White Topaz faceted gemstone beads on either side of the stack. The overall look makes for a beautifully meaningful, minimalistic necklace on its own or a fabulous addition to your necklace stack!

If you would like to order a necklace with a variety of birthstones, please reach out for this custom order. I'd be happy to help you make a custom birthstone necklace! Email me, Dawn, at hello@flourishandflame.com.

If you were to search birthstone in Google, you'd get a few variations of what gem is actually used for each birth month. Flourish and Flame Jewelry has gone through the internet and decided on the most popular gems for each month, keeping the prices economical and family budget-friendly.

I did have a few exceptions, due to the cost of the gems:

April is Diamond which is well-known as an expensive gem so we have swapped that out for a Rainbow Moonstone, which is a gorgeous, clear gem with hints of rainbow colours.

September is Sapphire which is also pricey so we have swapped that out for a similar colour - the stunning Lapis Lazouli.

October is Opal which is more expensive so we have exchanged that for a beautifully neutral-coloured Dendrite Opal.

December is Turquoise so we have found that the London Blue Topaz is very similar.

All pieces are crafted by hand so may have slight differences but all will have the same high quality materials.

  • While gold-filled and sterling silver are perfectly safe to wear in fresh water, we would advise taking your gemstone necklace off before showering or swimming. Please keep it in a soft satchel to avoid any scratches.

If it requires cleaning, please do so much the same as your gold-filled and sterling silver jewelry; use warm water and mild dishsoap and gently wipe it clean with a soft cloth.

The maker and the heart behind it all

HEY THERE! I'M DAWN

I hand make each piece right here in Ottawa. When I became a mom, I ditched all my fun statement pieces and opted for comfortable and practical jewelry.

As time went on, I realized these practical pieces were also boring. I was craving jewelry that was practical but also let me express myself.

When I couldn’t find it, I started making my own and Flourish and Flame was born.

FAQs

What is gold-filled?

Think of it as a solid layer of real gold securely bonded to a base metal like jeweler's brass. It's not just a surface coating – it's heat and pressure combined to ensure it stays put. By law, it needs to have at least 5% pure gold by weight, making it more valuable than gold-plated options. So, it's like enjoying the gold look without breaking the bank!

Why demi-fine?

Demi-fine jewelry is the bridge between costume jewelry and fine jewelry. It is more durable than costume jewelry (or fast-fashion jewelry) as it partially comprised of precious materials like gold and silver, however, it is not purely made of precious metals. It is still hypoallergenic and shower-proof, another reason it is a better choice than costume jewelry.

How do you make the jewelry size-inclusive - besides just more sizes?

When designing new pieces, I take everything I hear at markets into consideration. From beautiful people saying "I have sausage fingers" to "My neck is too short for long earrings", I consider it all and make adjustments to pieces so everyone can go home feeling confident and included. Don't we all deserve beautiful jewelry?!

How can I care for my jewelry?

There are things you can do to keep your jewelry looking its absolute best! I recommend taking your jewelry off before showers and sleeping and to put your jewelry on after you apply lotion, oils and sunscreen. Your jewelry would love it if it was gently cleaned and dried after being exposed to salt water, sweat, oils and lotions. To store your jewelry, please place it in a zippered plastic bag (they really do work the best). Metals do not like oxygen or humidity and will tarnish over time so keeping it in a plastic bag will help them last even longer.

How can I clean my jewelry?

To clean your jewelry, simply place it in a small bowl of warm water and gentle dish soap and let it soak for 30 minutes. After that time, you may gently (very gently!) rub your piece with a soft toothbrush or cloth. Rinse it off and dry your piece thoroughly. You may also use a jeweler's cloth with a jewelry cleaner to gently rub your piece.
